Coastal Industries also insulates glass. Insulating glass units (or “IG units”) improve thermal performance by providing a thermal break – two or more lites separated by a sealed air space. This enables the glass to meet two very different requirements – keeping heat in during colder weather and keeping heat out during warmer weather. Insulating glass is a very effective way to reduce air-to-heat transfer through the glazing. When used in conjunction with low-E, IG units perform even better for conserving energy. Low-E glass refers to glass with a low-emissivity coating. It reduces heat gain or loss by reflecting long-wave infrared energy (heat) and therefore, decreases the U-value and solar heat gain, and in doing so, improves the energy efficiency of the glazing. Because of its relative neutrality in appearance and energy efficiency, low-E glass is widely used in residential and commercial buildings.
